Potential Signs Your Roof Needs to be Replaced

Let’s be honest… when it comes to our roof, we rarely think about it. It’s a good and a bad thing. They last pretty long but it’s a hassle to get them done.

Roofs are meant to be durable and resistant to harsh weather, but that doesn’t mean they are indestructible.

As time passes,  asphalt shingles endure heavy rain, chunks of hail, scorching heat, and even cold temperatures. This can cause the shingles to expand in the heat and contract in the cold. Shingles shrink as they age! This can make the shingles weaker and more prone to leaks, moss/algae growth, or just simply being blown by the wind!

A couple flaws don’t necessarily require a roof replacement, but there are other signs you should look out for.

Here’s when you should call a roofer:

1. Your Roof is.....Old

Expecting something much more concerning? You wouldn’t believe how many homeowners have neglected their roof for just doing their job. Roofs that are 10 years or old are typically nearing the end of their life. This is why you should inspect your roof every year. We provide an “Anniversary Inspection Program” when you get your roof replaced with us. Let us worry about your roof for you!

2. Missing/Cracking Shingles

One of the main two culprits: Missing and/or Cracking Shingles. As we mentioned before, shingles will become frail and decay over time. Following an inspection, cracked, curled, or falling shingles show that they are decayed and should be replaced ASAP. A full replacement may be necessary if several shingles are found decayed. A roof with missing or broken shingles is also an indication that the roof should be replaced. The roof isn’t providing ample protection and can be the result of decay or poor-quality shingles. Patches of missing or broken shingles may lead to leaks, and the roof should be replaced ASAP to avoid any further loss of protection.

3. Leaks/Water Damage

The most troublesome of them all… LEAKS! No matter what you do, it feels like there’s always a leak somewhere. This is a major sign that you need a new roof or repairs to your roof at the least. Even the smallest leak can grow and become a much larger problem, causing damage to your property and possessions. If you’ve noticed any leaking or water stains, contact Stress Free Roofing to further identify the problem.

4. Growth

Many things fall under this category… Algae, Mold, Moss, and Mildew can all form in or on your roof. Mold is one of the most common types of growth you’ll find. It’s easy to identify and very damaging as it absorbs water into wood or drywall.

Just like mold, Algae growth can damage the exterior of your roof as it causes the shingles to rot. Algae are found in damp and humid climates.

Moss and algae share similarities. They both grow in a damp environment but they also cause your shingles to rot. Although some people do consider the look of moss attractive, it’s a hassle to maintain. As it continues to spread and grow, moss draws in more moisture with it.

5. Etc...

There are plenty of signs that indicate your roof isn’t in the best condition. Granule loss, hail damage, sagging roofline, dark streaks, or even wildlife damage.
